11 Questions with MuralHeart

If you could share one thing with an audience before they first tuned into your music, what would you say?

Enjoy the journey; our music was made for us from our everyday experiences. We hope we bring you guys relatability, nostalgia and comfort too.

What’s a non-music thing, a book, a place, a random job, a conversation you overheard, that actually changed how you create music?

We started our journey together at Loughborough University, so our experiences, highs, lows and the people we have met all came from Loughborough. Whilst not a big place, each of us has had our own unique experiences within the town and uni that influenced the way in which we write, perform and contribute to the music we produce. Our range of backgrounds and abilities is what sets us apart; each of us offering different insights and perspectives into our music and what we are trying to achieve.

Give us a song origin story. Where did the idea come from, and did you know straight away that it was something, or did it take a while to reveal itself?

Our song ‘How You Been?’ details a chance encounter with a stranger by one of our band members. The song is about a girl who was passed in the street almost 10 years ago now. She looked like an everyday person; however, her defining feature was a large scar across her wrists. Since that day, the passing had not been thought about until recently, when she appeared in a dream expressing several potential outcomes for her life since that day. Be it a good or bad ending, this sparked a curiosity about how she is doing now, even though we will most likely never bump into her again.

Pick a song that you’ve released that could only have been written at that exact moment in your lives. What was going on, and is there any part of you that wishes you could still be in that moment?

‘Forever With You’ is a song we think most people wish they could always be in. Capturing the value of time with the people we care about; memories are some of the greatest gifts we can receive in life. Having written the song from a special place, the underlying innocence of wishing the little moments with the ones we love could last forever is something we strive for every day.

Tell us about a gig that went somewhere unexpected: a night where the room, the crowd, or just something in the air made it feel like more than a show. What happened?

Having been part of previous bands, performing at open mics and gigs, we were all very excited for our first gig together back in March. We had arranged the whole thing ourselves, with the help of our university music society, setting up all the equipment, making posters and finding support bands. We were unsure how many people would turn up to our gig as a new band, but we were still excited to get to perform.

As the first support act started to play, more and more people started arriving until the venue was completely crammed. Once we hit the stage and realised how amazing the support from friends, locals, the university and the venue was, we felt closer than ever as a band. Each of us felt motivated and inspired to keep that feeling of doing what we love, as we couldn’t wait to continue the journey we had just started.

What’s going on in the world right now, nothing to do with music, that’s quietly making its way into what you’re working on?

A lot of our music is based around growing up and feeling nostalgia through transitioning from a child through to adulthood. The battles and experiences that came with this have shaped who we are today, and how we write based on our personal observations and progression.

There’s a sound, an instrument, a texture you haven’t used yet, but it’s there in the back of your head. What is it, and what’s it waiting for?

Look out for new music in the works, as we plan to push our sound beyond classic rock instruments! Our guitarist and lead vocalist (Jamie Wall) is also a grade 8 Cello player, and we have been waiting for the perfect song to include some of this classical talent in the mix. While there may only be three of us, our ideas are endless.

Which artist, alive, dead, from any era, would you most want to play your music to?

Chris Cornell; need we say more? We are big fans of his music!

Forget the big moments. If your music was the soundtrack to one small, ordinary moment in someone’s day, what would that moment look like?

Collectively, Muralheart’s music evokes an uplifting wonder; whilst themes vary, our inspiration from the everyday is something we encourage others to wonder about with us. It is because of this that our music can be described as no other moment than lying down at the top of a grassy hill, staring up into the clouds with an empty mind.

Anything could happen in this moment; it just depends which song you want to listen to!

What’s next for you? Tell us what you’re working on and if you have anything exciting in the pipeline.

As a new band, our exciting first step is releasing our music! Our very first single ‘Sentimental (Once Again)’ is set to be released in the next few weeks! In the meantime, we are working tirelessly on our other singles, with the aim of releasing an EP later this year, and a full album in early 2027.

Any final words to leave us with?

We have only just started showing the world what Muralheart can do, and we have no intention of slowing down!
