As they prepare to perform live at The Sunflower Lounge on Sunday, 13th September, we thought we’d have a chat with Fallen Horse to get to know them a little better…
"Descriptions of sparseand vast landscapeswere images that fedinto the creation of'Burnt Past'"
What’s a non-music thing, a book, a place, a random job, a conversation you overheard, that actually changed how you create music?
The Border trilogy of books by Cormac McCarthy had a massive influence on our band, as it is what led to the name Fallen Horse. The descriptions of sparse and vast landscapes were images that fed into the creation of ‘Burnt Past’.
Give us a song origin story. Where did the idea come from, and did you know straight away that it was something, or did it take a while to reveal itself?
Usually we end our set with a song called ‘The Sea’ that was inspired by my daughter staring out to sea and singing to herself. We already had a chord progression that we had been messing with, and it has evolved as more musicians have joined the band. Now we have a piece that allows for a crescendo that represents the swell of the ocean.

Tell us about a gig that went somewhere unexpected: a night where the room, the crowd, or just something in the air made it feel like more than a show. What happened?
We played the Rock and Roll Brewhouse in December, where we played live with our drummer, Chris. We did a cover of ‘Just Like Christmas’ by Low as our encore. The venue was so busy, and members of the audience were playing along with bells, before we ended in a psych swirling melee full of festive.
Forget the big moments. If your music was the soundtrack to one small, ordinary moment in someone’s day, what would that moment look like?
Our music would be the soundtrack to someone walking through a forest on a dank winter’s day, with a hint of sunlight flickering through the bare branches.
What’s next for you? Tell us what you’re working on and if you have anything exciting in the pipeline.
We are looking to record a couple of tracks as a five-piece in October and hopefully release a single or EP on vinyl.
Fallen Horse is a Birmingham-based alternative ensemble weaving an atmospheric soundscape that bridges the gap between gritty Americana and haunting Scandi-noir. Having performed and recorded in various configurations over the years, Fallen Horse has evolved into its definitive form as a powerhouse five-piece band.
See Fallen Horse live when they support Frances Mistry at The Sunflower Lounge on Sunday 13th September.
