De Nada
DYGL (pronounced “Day-Glo”) is a four-piece indie rock band from Tokyo, Japan, who have spent a decade quietly building one of the most interesting catalogues in guitar music. Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr produced their debut album, and that New York garage rock lineage has run through everything they’ve done since.
De Nada marks a shift from the open, dynamic post-rock sound of their previous single ‘NRG’ towards something tougher and heavier, rooted in US alternative rock. The lyrics cut sharply, featuring lines about everything being for sale and the cost of authenticity in a world built on commerce, and the band wraps that urgency in a sound that’s all coiled tension followed by sudden release.
DYGL draw from UK and US guitar and alternative rock traditions while incorporating elements of psychedelia, post-punk and free jazz, and De Nada showcases that range at its most focused. This is a band firing on all cylinders, and one that deserves a much wider UK audience.
