Porcelain
Six and a half minutes is a long time to ask someone to stay with you. Insider Trading make it feel like not nearly enough.
‘Porcelain’ is the kind of track that rewards the patience it demands. It opens with an almost deceptive looseness, a slacker-ish, unhurried quality that lulls you into thinking you know where it’s going before pulling the rug out entirely. The math-rock influences surface gradually, the song shifting shape through intriguing segments that keep you leaning forward rather than drifting off, each turn feeling both surprising and inevitable in retrospect.
What holds it all together is the love story running through the lyrics… and what a love story it is. Obsessive, funny, tender and self-aware all at once, the writing captures a very specific kind of infatuation: the person who is completely out of your league and completely out of their mind, and how hopelessly compelling that combination is.
Lines like “I’ll be your loser / I’ll be your pretty pink frock” and “your skin’s like porcelain on fresh down white sheets” sit alongside sharper social observations around the class dynamics, the Soho bars versus Argyle Street, the marble halls with wooden doors that would never grant access, giving the song a wit and texture that elevate it well above a simple crush song.
The track’s emotional temperature shifts constantly. There are moments of almost joyous uplift that cut through the tension, before the outro builds to one final, cathartic proclamation of “I’ll be your everything, everything, everything“, layered and intensifying until it crashes into something genuinely moving. The tender finish earns every second of the journey to get there.
Comparisons to Black Country, New Road and black midi are apt, but Insider Trading catalyse a different sentiment that is warmer, more romantic, and more nakedly felt. ‘Porcelain’ is a remarkable piece of music. Don’t let it pass you by.
